What Is Memory Care?

Memory care services offer personalized support for those living with Alzheimer’s, dementia, and other conditions that can cause cognitive challenges. Our highly experienced team provides tailored care in a structured environment to help elevate our residents’ quality of life.

At Kingston, we use Teepa Snow’s GEMS memory care model to identify the level of care your loved one needs and personalize their experience to the best of our abilities.

Teepa Snow’s GEMS® Model

Our community uses proven memory care techniques to support our residents while helping families learn more about effective communication strategies for interacting with their loved ones.

We take inspiration from Teepa Snow’s Positive Approach to Care and the GEMS® model. Our associates receive specialized training to help them support our residents and recognize their unique strengths.

At Kingston, we break down the level of care we provide into 6 categories, also known as “gems.”

Sapphire

A sapphire brain ages normally and is considered to be quite flexible and organized. Those in a sapphire state are often excellent care partners for those living with dementia due to their adaptability.

Emerald

People in the emerald state may find it tougher to maintain clarity in their thoughts and communication. They may not be aware of these changes and may end up attributing issues to others.

Family members as well as caregivers can be more successful in offering support if they try adapting to the situation rather than focusing on flaws.

Diamond

Individuals living in a diamond state stay sharp and clear but may act more rigid, displaying several facets of cognition but with a bit of inflexibility when faced with changes or challenges.

They can still thrive despite not being comfortable with change. This state is often characterized by stubbornness combined with a combination of past and present behaviors, which can make it harder for loved ones to spot the presence of dementia.

Pearl

Individuals in the pearl state have constantly active reflexes, their body systems often start to fail, and their gross motor skills can start to deteriorate. Despite these setbacks, these individuals can still shine with a support system that helps reveal the marvelous pearl that remains.

Ruby

In the ruby state, a person may notice a decline in fine motor skills, which in turn, may affect speech, vision, and the ability to chew and swallow easily. However, they are usually able to maintain overall strength and perform larger movements.

Care partners should try tackling stress by taking deep breaths and using a flexible and understanding approach to return to a calm, supportive state, akin to being a sapphire.

Amber

Those in an amber state are usually focused on the present, motivated by curiosity and sensations over caution, and have a reduced awareness of safety.

They search for enjoyable experiences but tend to react strongly against their dislikes, which can present challenges for care partners who may struggle with the inconsistency between the person’s past and present behavior.
